How do I measure my slope angle?

Tip: If you're on your phone, the Dirt Locker® App can measure slope angle for you automatically.

  • Recommended: Use the Dirt Locker® App for automatic slope measurement using your phone's built-in sensors
  • Alternative: Use your smartphone: "Measure" App for iPhone
  • Select "level" feature in any app
  • Lay a 2x4 vertically along your slope
  • Place your smartphone in the center (laying flat) to get slope degrees, be sure to calibrate it out to 0° first
  • Test this method in multiple areas for accuracy
  • Watch video above for detailed example
  • Pro tip: The Dirt Locker® App makes it easy to log multiple slope angles across your hillside.
Click here to learn how to get your slope ratio
  • Tools needed: 4ft level and a measuring tape
  • Hold the level perpendicular to the slope in the middle of your hill
  • With a measuring tape, measure the distance from the bottom corner of the level to the ground - this is your rise
  • Divide the rise by the run (4ft level) to get your slope ratio
  • Examples: 2ft/4ft = 0.5 ratio or 4ft/4ft = 1.0 ratio
  • Important: Whether you measure in inches or feet, always keep your measuring units consistent
  • Pro tip: Take multiple measurements across different areas of your slope for the most accurate average

How do I figure out my project area?

Slope length: Start 1-3 feet below the top ridgeline. Measure vertically down to where you want the front of your last Dirt Locker row to end.

Slope width: Measure from the left side of your hill to the right side. You can measure the entire width, or designate a section to terrace as you can add on later.

Total Area: In the case for needing the Mini Dirt Lockers, use a measuring tape to measure your slope length in feet (top to bottom) and slope width in feet (left to right). Multiply LxW to get total area or SQFT.
