How to Choose the Right Dirt Locker® System for Your Hillside Erosion Control

Erosion can happen on all slope types and terrain, which is why Dirt Locker® hillside terracing planters are widely used by homeowners, landscapers, and contractors across the U.S. and globally. When determining the right design, estimate, and Dirt Locker® model for effective erosion control and slope stabilization, there are a few important factors to consider. Let’s dive into the key details you need to know to successfully terrace your unique sloped yard. Determine Your Slope Type Your slope type is defined by its shape. For Dirt Locker® purposes, you will need to determine whether your slope is linear or curved. Examples of curved slopes include concave and convex formations. A linear slope is essentially an incline that moves in one direction—straight, consistent, and without curvature. Understanding this difference is essential for selecting the correct Dirt Locker® model. Understand Your Terrain Type Terrain type refers to the physical condition of the hillside itself. Ask yourself whether the ground is uneven, bumpy, or full of dips and pivots, or whether it is fairly uniform and even. To successfully install Dirt Lockers, prepping your slope ahead of time is strongly recommended. This may include raking uneven spots, filling gaps, or backfilling in areas with major slope variations. Dirt Lockers conform directly to the shape of your slope and terrain, so if placed on wavy or unprepared ground, they will replicate that shape. Dirt Lockers should be installed on a cleared hillside, free of grass and vegetation, while working carefully around any existing plants you want to keep. Identify Your Soil Type for Correct J Hooks Soil type is important for determining which J Hooks you will need. Dirt Lockers are anchored with two pieces of metal rebar called J Hooks, along with two U-shaped garden pins. If you have hard, rocky, clay-heavy, or difficult soil, you should avoid the longer 24" J Hooks, as they require significant effort and may hit rock below the surface. For these conditions, use the 16" × ½" size. When working with loose, sandy, or freshly added soil, it’s best to use the longer 24" J Hooks for added durability and security. For average, workable soil, the 16" × ⅜" size is typically a good fit. Choosing the correct J Hook size helps ensure long-lasting erosion control and hillside stability. How to Measure a Slope Angle This may be the most important factor when determining your Dirt Locker® size and quantity. We break slope angles into ranges to help identify the proper sizing. For slopes ranging between 10°–24°, you fall into the Mild Slope category. For slopes between 25°–45°, you fall into the Steep Slope category. Determining your slope angle ensures accurate planning and proper terracing performance. Working With Multiple Slopes or Varying Conditions It is very common to have varying slope angles or multiple slopes within one yard. You may have a mild linear slope in one area but a steep, curved slope in another. Or your slope may begin linear on one side but wrap around into a convex curve. These scenarios make your estimate more nuanced, and in such cases, a professional consultation with our Dirt Locker® founder is highly recommended, as you may require multiple sizes or configurations. Networked vs. Detached Dirt Locker® Models Choosing the right model is essential for both performance and long-term stability. Now that you have a solid understanding of how to size your Dirt Lockers and choose the correct J Hooks, let’s discuss the difference between the Networked and Detached Dirt Locker® models. As mentioned earlier, there are two slope types—curved and linear. For curved slopes at any angle, select the Detached model. For steep slopes over 35°, you should also choose the Detached model. Here’s what makes each type different. Networked Dirt Locker®: The Networked model features a center slot in the middle of the face of the Dirt Locker®. This slot serves as the connection point for the row tab of the Dirt Locker® installed below it, allowing you to network your entire system as one unified structure. This model is recommended for linear slopes only, at angles up to 35°. Detached Dirt Locker®:The Detached model does not have a center slot, as you will be creating separated, individual rows. This design ensures that on curved slopes or extra-steep terrain, each Dirt Locker® remains level and aligned rather than being pulled upward, twisted, or misaligned—issues that can occur when a networked system is forced around curves or uneven terrain. When using Detached Dirt Lockers, each row remains independent, so no individual unit can affect the alignment of the entire system. This independence allows each row to settle naturally, promoting a smooth installation and long-term stability. Each row should be installed a minimum of 3" apart. Detached systems still allow you to create walking paths and fully benefit from the terracing and erosion control functions. Detached Dirt Lockers also do not include a row tab since they do not connect to the row above. Use Detached Dirt Lockers on steep slopes from 36°–45°, curved slopes, or uneven terrain. In some cases, you may find that one area of your yard can use the Networked version while another requires the Detached version. You can either purchase both models or simplify things by purchasing the Networked model and using it in a detached manner where needed by simply choosing not to network the units in areas where it is not suitable.
